James Hallowes-Green: Championing cabin crew training at FLY4 Airlines

When James Hallowes-Green joined FLY4 Airlines as one of the very first Senior Cabin Crew members, he had already built up nearly two decades of flying experience. Now a Training and Standards Instructor (TSI), James is playing a key role in shaping the next generation of FLY4 cabin crew, helping to deliver safe, consistent, and customer-focused operations across the growing network.

James began his aviation career in 2005 with easyJet, initially planning to fly for just one summer. But, like many in the industry, he soon discovered he had caught the ‘flying bug’. “Lo and behold, here I still am, 20 years later,” he says. “The flying bug is most definitely a real thing!”

From short-haul routine to international adventure

Before joining FLY4, James had always worked in short-haul operations, returning to his home base every evening. The chance to fly longer routes and experience a different style of operation is what first attracted him to the airline. “As soon as I saw the advert for Senior Cabin Crew members with FLY4 – and to expect to be away from home for periods of time – my interest was immediately ignited.”

Since joining, he has operated flights across the world for a range of customers, including a memorable two-day charter trip to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. “I’ve had the pleasure of watching the company go from strength to strength,” he says. “Right from our first flight back in March 2024 through to operating for a variety of customers globally.”

Building excellence through training

James’s progression into the Training and Standards Instructor role has been a major milestone in his career – one that took longer than he expected, but which he describes as “worth the wait”.

This summer, he helped deliver intensive conversion training for 150 TUI cabin crew members joining under FLY4’s AOC. “Training and passing 150 crew in five weeks between us was no easy feat,” he explains. “But as a team we pulled together and conquered it. We all relished a short rest following the last training course!”

In his current role, James carries out cabin safety evaluations onboard flights, supporting crew during live operations, and acting as a coach and point of contact. “One thing people may not know about my role is that it’s one of continuous development,” he says. “There’s always something new to be learned, whether it’s a new way of doing something or learning something more technical about the aircraft.”

Alongside delivering training, TSIs at FLY4 complete industry-recognised qualifications, including Crew Resource Management and Train the Trainer certification. “Even if we were to leave the aviation industry, we really do learn skills for life.”

Putting safety and learning at the heart of the culture

What stands out for James at FLY4 is the culture. “The culture here is one of safety first, no compromises,” he says. “Although some untoward things can happen, it’s the non-punitive and open culture that ensures we are always learning, evolving and proactively delivering a safe, reliable service, whoever the customer may be.”

It’s a supportive and transparent environment that values feedback, development and the wellbeing of its people. And it’s this foundation that James believes will carry the airline into a successful future.

Looking ahead with pride and optimism

After years of experience in the skies, James is now looking ahead to what comes next with the FLY4 family. “Although we’re currently small, I’ve no doubt that there are big things to come,” he says. “I very much look forward to our future growth – flying our lime green flag and making the FLY4 difference every single day, every single place we go.”

With his passion for people, safety, and high standards, James Hallowes-Green is not just training FLY4’s crew – he’s helping to define the values and professionalism that will guide the airline as it continues to grow.
